Liklukt: Trapped on the seabed
04/07/06 || Lord K Philipson
“Liklukt is a decent band and they are alot better than the first impression hints at. I wish they cut down on the crappy lyrics, the fun’n’games attitude and the poor production, that would make it easier for one to take them seriously.”
That’s how I ended the review of Liklukt’s demo “Sons of Svalbard” some time ago. In the end of June the guys decided to send me their new demo, “Trapped on the seabed” with a completely killer letter attached to it saying (among other things): “Ok, this time you’re getting this thing in English. Not too long ago you reviewed our previous demo “Sons of Svalbard”, and it went quite well. You said that we should quit the inside jokes, improve the sound and drop the crappy lyrics. We have now recorded another demo, with improved sound (marginally), dropped the inside jokes, and… well… the lyrics still suck but we switched bad puns in favour of clichés. This was also recorded in my old bedroom so the sound we got is by pure luck. It’s not mastered either, therefor you will have to turn it up and I bet some things sounds like crap on you stereo, like the vocals are too high again etc. So be it! We are cheap and this is just the best we could do soundwise at the moment.”
I just love that fucken attitude. And ending the letter with “No pics attached, because we are hideous” renders them even more points in my book. That’s how it’s done, people. See and learn.
About the sound first then… There’s nothing wrong with it at all and it definitely sounds better than alot of albums I have heard claimed to be recorded professionally. Liklukt’s new offering is real fine by all means when it comes to the production. I can’t say I really remember how they sounded musically on the last demo but I have a feeling this is a major improvement for some reason. “Trapped on the seabed” is a 5-song demo full of melodic riffage-fests, doublebasses and growly vocals. And most of it sounds all fine.
We are not being overwhelmed by blasts and over-technicalities here. Liklukt concentrates on finding some groovy shit and walk with it. And they do it well. I dig this quite a bit actually. It’s a stew of death metal oriented stuff, mixed with more melodic outbursts and a few touches of black metal riffing at times. Out of the 5 songs here, “Steel colossus” walks away the winner while the title-track actually catches last place. The opening-riff of “Steel colossus” is something I wish I had written (Bolt Thrower thinks the same), I guess I’ll have to settle for stealing it from them.
“Trapped on the seabed” is not only a shitty title for a demo, it’s also a nicely executed piece of Norwegian metal that I definitely think you should check out. There’s nothing unique about Liklukt, at all, but they are definitely having their shit together. Good work boys. Looking forward to yer next release.
